Lubbers Cow Share Program operates as a dairy herd lease.
What is a dairy herd lease? Participants enter into a dairy herd lease agreement by leasing a percentage interest in the herd of Jersey dairy cows. They then pay the farmer a boarding fee for the care and milking of their cow. Leases pick up their share of the milk once a week.
Why a dairy herd lease? Michigan does not allow the direct sale of raw milk. Leasing a percentage interest in the herd of dairy cows allows access to local, fresh (unprocessed) milk. It also provides the lease holder with first hand knowledge of the farm caring for the herd.
Highlights of Lubbers Farm LLC Dairy Herd Lease:
Our cows are grass-fed. They are moved to fresh paddocks daily where they enjoy the grass nature intended them to eat, fresh untreated well water, exercise and sunshine. They also receive a minimal amount of organic grain, three to five pounds per day.
Cow health takes precedence over production. We provide the cows with free-choice natural salt, earth minerals and kelp. We do not use growth hormones, estrogens, steroids, herbicides, fungicides or pesticides.
We milk Jerseys. They are a very old heritage breed well suited to grazing. Their cream content is very high. They are beautiful, gentle animals and every one has a name.
Workshops are offered free to cow share members. They include butter making, fermented milk products (yogurt, sour cream, etc.), ice cream and fresh cheese.
We, our children and our grandchildren have been drinking raw milk from the farm since 1998. Please feel free to set up an appointment to check out our operation and, of course, meet the cows.
