Grand River Chicken
Chickens at Lubbers are raised in partnership with Tom Cary. The chicks start out in warm brooders on the farm and then go out on pasture in movable pens as soon as their nature and the weather allows. On pasture they will have many weeks to enjoy the sun, grass and bugs and grow into their chickeness. They are fed organic grain and earn their keep by providing important nutrients for the soil in the pastures. The Grand River Chickens project not only raises chickens but builds a bridge with some young entrepreneurs from Grand Rapids inner city. Part of the profits from this project will go into their hands to reward them for their time and part into an investment to expand the project in the future. If you’ve never tasted pastured chicken before, you won’t want to miss this. If you have, we’re pretty sure you won’t miss this. If you have any questions or would like to help with this project, please contact Tom Cary at (616) 336-9427 or byrontc@gmail.com.
Turkey
Ben Franklin proposed the turkey as the national bird for some very good reasons. They were plentiful and they tasted great! Of course, their diet and living conditions were quite a bit different than the conventional birds found in grocery stores today. We are seeking to return that flavor and health by raising our turkeys out on pasture. They are kept in large pens which are moved on a regular basis. The pens prevent the fox and coyote from dining first. They are fed organic grains and provided with fresh well water. We raise the double breasted white turkeys along with some heritage varieties. It is wonderful to see the majestic birds outside strutting their stuff.
Our meats are offered for sale through an annual newsletter that includes pricing and an order form. You can download the newsletter or e-mail us with your contact information. We’ll add you to our mailing list.
