The Foraging Workshops

The Foraging Workshops take place right here on the farm. They are focused on the 60 acres of woods on the south side of the farm running along the Grand River. The rolling ravines contain a rich biodiversity of spring wildflowers, mushrooms and animal life. Dress appropriately for the weather and an hour and a half hike. These workshops are taught by Rachael, one of the bakers at Little Rooster Bread Company, who has many years of foraging experience.

Spring Wild Edibles Workshop
Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

In this workshop we will take a hike through the woods looking for spring edibles such as wild leeks, marsh marigolds, mushrooms and more. Rachael will discuss harvesting techniques, which parts of the plants to collect and when, and how to harvest sustainably. We will then take our harvest up to the bakery and prepare the plants to be eaten. You will get a chance to taste the plants by themselves and in some dishes we will prepare with our freshly foraged ingredients. You’ll also get some recipes to try at home. If you’ve ever been interested in foraging, or using wild edibles in cooking, this is the class for you. $25.00 per person. Space is limited.

Garlic Mustard Pull
Saturday, May 25, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Please join us this Memorial Day weekend for our first annual Garlic Mustard Pull at Lubbers Family Farm. The woods at the farm contain such richness of life. In order to preserve this we need your help in eradicating this invasive species from the farm. Morning refreshments will be available before we go out. After the pull, we will show you how to make Garlic Mustard pesto with the use of other wild edibles from the woods and cheese from Cowslip Creamery. In thanks for your help, we will provide a pasta lunch tossed with our fresh made pesto. We’ll send you home with the recipe and, if you like, bring a container to take some pesto home with you. There is no cost for this event, but please register so we know how many to expect for lunch.
